Uzbekistan and Belgium: new opportunities for “green” cooperation
Uzbekistan continues to actively develop international environmental cooperation, focusing on the exchange of experience, the introduction of modern technologies and the search for sustainable solutions to protect the environment. In this context, Belgium is considered as one of the promising partners - a country with rich experience in the field of environmental management and green innovation.
The first step towards cooperation was the participation of the delegation of the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan in the Regional Forum of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which was held in October 2024 in Belgian city of Bruges. The forum became a platform for the exchange of ideas and discussion of possible areas of interaction between experts from the two countries.
Belgium is deservedly considered one of the leaders in Europe in the field of waste management, resource recycling and the introduction of circular economy principles. This experience is of great interest for Uzbekistan, where modern approaches to waste management and the development of “green” energy are being actively introduced.
Particular attention is also paid to issues of water resources. Both countries are faced with the problem of water scarcity, and the Belgian experience in managing transboundary rivers such as the Scheldt and Meuse can become a useful example for improving water use systems and water quality monitoring in Uzbekistan.
A separate area of cooperation is science and education. The Central Asian University of Environment and Climate Change (Green University) intends to develop partnerships with leading universities in Belgium, such as Catholic University of Leuven, Ghent University, University of Liège and University of Antwerp. These institutions are among the world leaders in environmental studies and research, which opens up great opportunities for exchange of students, scientists and joint projects.
In addition, Belgian partners are invited to take part in the 20th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES COP20), which will be held from November 24 to December 5, 2025 in Samarkand, as well as in the international exhibition Eco Expo Central Asia 2026, scheduled for early June 2026
Cooperation with Belgium can give new impetus to the development of environmental initiatives in Uzbekistan, bring innovative approaches and help implement joint projects in the field of climate, biodiversity and green economy. All this is a step forward towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
