The contribution of our people to Victory is a chronicle of true courage and heroism
80 years have passed since the end of World War II. Despite the decades that have passed since then, her story, the suffering and trials it brought, are not forgotten. On the contrary, the horrors of war remind us of the value of peace and tranquility. The Day of Remembrance and Honor, celebrated on May 9, carries this deep meaning.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Victory Park on this day and took part in a memorial ceremony.
Soul melodies sounded throughout the park. Every monument, symbol and inscription in this place reflects the tragic truth of the war and emphasizes the enormous contribution of our people to the Victory. It gets especially crowded here on memorable days, like today.
Following the tradition of recent years, the head of state laid a wreath at the “Ode to Fortitude” monument. This majestic monument symbolizes the suffering, hardship, courage and loss that our people suffered during the war.
According to archival data, almost 2 million people out of a total population of 6.8 million took part in the bloody battles against fascism. Of these, about 540 thousand died, 158 thousand were missing, over 50 thousand people died from unbearable torture in concentration camps, more than 60 thousand returned from the front with disabilities.
The valor of Uzbek soldiers and officers is evidenced by the fact that 214 thousand of them were awarded military orders and medals.
During the war years, our republic became a reliable rear base for the front: equipment, weapons, clothing and food were sent to the front line in huge quantities. Despite the most difficult conditions, the Uzbek people accepted with open hearts about 1.5 million evacuees from war zones, including 250 thousand orphans.
— All this is a chronicle of true courage and heroism. We have the right to be proud of our brave people, who made a worthy contribution to such a difficult and glorious Victory. We must not forget this heroism; it is necessary to convey these facts to young people. This is especially important in these troubled times. Each of us must be ready every day to defend the Motherland, emphasized Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated February 19, the country widely celebrates the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II and the Day of Remembrance and Honor. Those who gave their lives for the peaceful life of future generations are remembered with respect. Particular attention is paid to living labor veterans and older people, care and honor are shown.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Armed Forces, government and public organizations, community activists and respected elders. Participants laid flowers at the monument.
The head of state also inspected the “Light of Memory” composition installed in the park. It is dedicated to the heroism of the Uzbek people who fought at the front and worked in the rear. The monument is made in the form of two soaring birds, symbolizing the continuity of generations.
The composition combines historical heritage and contemporary art. Using the QR code placed on the monument, visitors can learn about the complex and the heroes of the war, download the book “Light of Memory.”
