Uzbekistan: Construction of the Olympic village is completed
The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the Olympic village built in Tashkent on August 18.
Construction began on November 9, 2022. Then the head of state noted that the Olympic village would become a symbol of the high creative potential of our people and the outstanding achievements of Uzbek sports, and would be distinguished by its perfect architecture, energy efficiency and the implementation of the most advanced innovative solutions.
These words were fully justified - an impressive complex was built in a short time on an area of more than 100 hectares. A unique project worth almost $290 million was implemented by CAMC Engineering in accordance with international standards.
The town has five main sports facilities.
The velodrome, built on the basis of complex engineering solutions and an original design, deserves special attention. The qualities, trajectory and turning angles of its track meet the requirements of the International Olympic Committee. The most durable wood species are used in the multi-layer coating. To maintain the quality of the surface, a stable temperature will be maintained inside the velodrome all year round. Even air resistance is taken into account. The lighting is organized evenly and optimally both for the convenience of athletes and for spectators and television broadcasts. The stands are designed for 2,200 people. In accordance with the new IOC requirements, protective barriers have been installed at the spectator seats. In addition, the velodrome is multifunctional: it can host competitions and training in table tennis and fencing. This is the first facility of this level in Uzbekistan. The President instructed to prepare a program for the development of cycling in the regions and the creation of the necessary conditions for this.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized that table tennis is an accessible and popular sport, and ordered to actively introduce it in schools and mahallas, as well as to organize the production of the necessary equipment.
In the center of the town there is a stadium with 12 thousand seats. It will host ceremonies during international tournaments, and the green field and nine-lane running track will host 48 athletics events, including the World Championships, Diamond League, Paralympics and IBSA Games for the Visually Impaired. The rest of the time, the stadium will be used for training camps and dual education. The four-story building at the stadium will house specialists from national teams and sports federations.
The head of state emphasized that athletics and Paralympic disciplines are of great importance for improving public health and are widely represented in the programs of the Olympic and Asian Games, but in our country their potential is not fully used. In this regard, it was instructed to develop a set of measures to develop all areas of athletics: reconstruct stadiums in the regions, improve conditions for training, attract foreign coaches and improve the skills of athletes.
The Aquatic Sports Palace is also modern and comfortable. Pools of 25x50 meters for swimming, 25x20 meters for diving, a training pool and gyms were built here. All conditions and sizes fully comply with international Olympic standards. Recently, a delegation from the World Aquatics federation inspected the complex and confirmed its compliance. Thus, Asian and world championships in swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo, including Olympic tournaments, can be held here. The stands are designed for more than 2 thousand spectators. The President noted the need for further development of aquatic sports and improving results at international tournaments.
Complexes for gaming and martial arts are also built to international standards. Each of them is three-story, with stands for 2 thousand seats. In one, training and international competitions in volleyball, basketball and handball are held, and in the martial arts hall - in judo, boxing and taekwondo.
During the visit, the President met with the athletes:
- In international arenas, you raise our flag and demonstrate the development of the country. Each of your victories is pride for the people, strength and inspiration for the youth. Continue these efforts, lead the juniors and raise our sport even higher, said Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
15 open fields for football, volleyball, tennis, field hockey and athletics have also been built in the Olympic village. The construction of a 400-bed hostel for Paralympic athletes and a Scientific and Practical Center for Sports Medicine is nearing completion.
All campus facilities will be energy efficient. Solar panels will be installed above the parking lots.

The Olympic village is a scientific, practical and educational and training center for domestic sports
President Shavkat about this Mirziyoyev said on November 18, 2023, while inspecting the construction of the Olympic village.
– Not only training, but also sports education, science and medicine should be combined here. In other words, this place will become a scientific-practical and educational-training center for sports in our country,” the head of state noted.
In accordance with this concept, the Ministry of Sports, the Anti-Doping Agency, the State Sports Academy, the Research Institute of Physical Culture and the Sports Development Center are located in the town.
During the current visit, information was presented on plans for the effective use of the infrastructure of the Olympic village, the location and activities of sports organizations.
First of all, international competitions will be held here. After their completion, the facilities will not be idle: training camps of national teams will be organized on their basis, and federations will establish interaction with sports schools. In addition, conditions for sports will be open to residents of the country.
The President met with the heads of sports organizations and federations.
– First of all, I congratulate our athletes and federations on the appearance of such a complex. With this, we have laid a solid foundation for the health of the younger generation and future victories. But this is just the beginning. Much more important is the massive development of sports and the training of professional athletes. We will develop sports both from a health and performance point of view. There are plans to build such Olympic towns in the regions as well. The main goal is the health and comprehensive development of our youth,” said Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
As you know, at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, our athletes performed successfully, taking 13th place in the overall team competition in both directions. Now the goal has been set to further develop the Olympic movement and improve results at the next competitions.
On July 8 of this year, the President signed a decree on the program for preparing Uzbek athletes for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. For the systematic organization of work, 14 regional divisions of the National Olympic Committee have been created. The Chairman of the Jokargy Kenes of Karakalpakstan, khokims of the regions and the city of Tashkent were appointed special representatives of the President for the development of the Olympic movement. Each region is assigned responsible persons from the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic Committee.
The main goal is to create a sustainable system for training athletes and conditions for high results not only at one Olympics, but for many years to come.
To identify and professionally train talented athletes from the lowest levels, a three-stage competition system “Olympic Peaks of New Uzbekistan” has been introduced. Its final stage will be held annually in the Olympic village under the name “Presidential Olympics”. Winners and medalists will be sent to Olympic centers for further professional training.
The activities of the Republican Olympic and Paralympic centers will be aimed at forming a reserve of national teams. To organize educational and training camps, the facilities of the Olympic village are transferred to them free of charge.
In addition, to expand the pool of athletes, the activities of private sports clubs will be improved and their participation in official competitions will be ensured. Athletes who show high results will be able to join national teams.
The President paid special attention to the development of mass sports.
– Courage and the spirit of struggle are in the blood of our people. Our people love sports. This love needs to be developed and sports made even more widespread in mahallas. There are local conditions for this, and new facilities continue to be built. Mass participation will definitely bring results, emphasized Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Instructions were also given to digitalize the field of sports, strengthen the activities of federations and expand the number of high-impact sports.
