Cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United States in the field of tourism
In recent years, relations between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the United States of America in the field of tourism have reached a qualitatively new level. The cooperation is based on the systematic work of the Committee on Tourism to implement the points of the Road Maps aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, expanding tourism exchanges and attracting American investment in the industry.
The period 2018–2019 became the starting point in strengthening the tourism dialogue between the two countries. Experts from the International Association of Tourism Professionals, headed by J. Luis Lorenzo Gutierrez, representatives of PBS and ABC television channels, as well as a delegation from the Congress of Bukharian Jews of the USA and Canada arrived in Uzbekistan. During the same period, the Committee for Tourism organized a series of visits by famous American bloggers Mark Vines and Sonny Side, thanks to which millions of viewers around the world were able to get acquainted with the gastronomic and cultural wealth of Uzbekistan.
An important step was the introduction of American online booking services - Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Tripadvisor. By the end of 2018, 886 hotels in the country were connected to these systems, which significantly increased the accessibility of Uzbekistan for American travelers.
Since 2019, special attention has been paid to promoting the tourism potential of Uzbekistan through US media and digital platforms. As part of the World Influencers Congress-2019 forum, more than 20 leading US bloggers arrived in Tashkent, including the Devin Super Tramp team, which shot the short film Aladdin in Bukhara and Khiva. These projects not only contributed to the promotion of the country in global social networks, but also created a positive image of Uzbekistan as a safe and hospitable destination.
In parallel, cooperation in the field of professional training developed. Thus, Vice President of the American Hotel and Lodging Institute (AHLA) Ed Castley conducted master classes for teachers of universities and colleges, sharing his experience of training specialists in the US tourism industry.
During the 2020 pandemic, with the assistance of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Washington, an online conference was held with the participation of leading American travel companies - ASTA, Intrepid Travel, G Adventures and others. Measures to restore tourist flows and improve tourist safety were discussed. In subsequent years, the participation of American media - The New York Times, National Geographic, Foreign Policy - in highlighting the country's tourism potential has intensified.
Joint media projects occupy a special place: filming by Mystery Box in 2021 and the documentary film "The Spirit of Samarkand", shown on CNN in 2023. These initiatives have become an important contribution to the promotion of the cultural heritage and modern life of the ancient cities of Uzbekistan.
In recent years, interaction between Uzbekistan and the United States in the field of tourism has acquired strategic importance. In 2024, a meeting was held between the Chairman of the Tourism Committee, Umid Shadiev, and US Ambassador Jonathan Henick, at which the prospects for the development of “green” tourism and personnel training were discussed. The participation of the Uzbek delegation in the prestigious exhibitions Miami World Travel Expo 2024 and New York Travel and Adventure Show 2025 has opened up new opportunities for promoting the country’s tourism brand. Moreover, Uzbekistan was recognized as the “Best New Participant” of the exhibition in New York.
The dynamics of the tourist flow from the United States clearly reflects the effectiveness of bilateral cooperation. From 2018 to 2024, the number of tourists from the United States tripled. This indicates a growing interest in the cultural and historical heritage of Uzbekistan, its hospitality and sustainable development of tourism infrastructure.
Cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United States in the field of tourism has become an important factor in strengthening mutual understanding between peoples, expanding cultural exchange and attracting investment into the country's economy. Every year, Uzbekistan more and more confidently declares itself as a modern, open and dynamically developing tourist destination on the world map.
