Football players of Uzbekistan won the regional cup
The final match of the CAFA Nations Cup tournament took place at the Olympic Stadium of the capital. The game was attended by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The national teams of Uzbekistan and Iran met in the decisive match. Regular time ended without goals, and the referee ordered extra periods. When it seemed that the outcome of the match would be decided in a penalty shootout, in the 120th minute Khozhiakbar Alizhanov, after serving from the flank, headed the ball into the opponent’s goal.
Thus, the Uzbekistan national team became the winner of the CAFA Nations Cup - 2025.
President Shavkat presented the gold medals and cup to our football players Mirziyoyev. The award ceremony was also attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other officials.
The tournament was excellent preparation for our team for the upcoming World Cup. Another significant event - the 13-year winless streak in matches with Iran ended. Let us remind you that in the first draw of the tournament in 2023, the Uzbeks lost to the Iranians in the final with a score of 0:1.
CAFA is the Central Asian Football Association, its tournament is held every two years. In addition to the national teams of Uzbekistan and Iran, the current competition included teams from Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, India and Oman.
The first international tournament held in the Olympic village was marked by the victory of our football players. There is deep symbolism in this: new arenas created for future generations become places of glory today. Let this victory be a good harbinger of new successes of Uzbek sports on the world stage.
